POSIX says that ‘echo FOO’ produces implementation-defined output
if FOO contains leading ‘-’, or ‘\’ anywhere, so don’t assume GNU
behavior in that case.
* Makefile.in (removenullpaths): Remove.
(epaths-force): Rewrite to avoid the need for ‘echo’.
(install-etc): Be clearer about escaping the shell metacharacters
‘\’ and ‘$’.
* Makefile.in (install-arch-indep, install-etcdoc):
* admin/charsets/mapconv, admin/merge-gnulib, admin/merge-pkg-config:
* admin/quick-install-emacs, build-aux/gitlog-to-emacslog:
* configure.ac, lib-src/rcs2log, make-dist:
* src/Makefile.in (lisp.mk):
Don’t assume ‘echo’ outputs ‘\’ and leading ‘-’ unscathed.
For example, use ‘printf '%s\n' "$foo"’ rather than ‘echo "$foo"’
if $foo can contain arbitrary characters.
* lisp/Makefile.in (TAGS): Use ‘ls’, not ‘echo’, to avoid ‘\’ issues.
* doc/lispref/two-volume.make (vol1.pdf):
* test/etags/make-src/Makefile (web ftp publish):
Use ‘printf’ rather than ‘echo -e’.
That way, 'make change-history' needs to change only ChangeLog.2,
instead of having to change two files.
* ChangeLog.2: Add commit info for range that this file covers.
* Makefile.in (new_commit_regexp): New macro.
(change-history-nocommit): Simplify, by putting what used to be
the gen_origin value into the data (ChangeLog.2) rather than
into the program (gitlog-to-emacslog).
* build-aux/gitlog-to-emacslog (gen_origin): Calculate from
the input file (e.g., ChangeLog.2) rather than by having a
constant in the program. Substitute it into the output.
* src/Makefile.in (lisp.mk): New rule to generate from loadup.el.
(shortlisp_filter): New variable.
(emacs$(EXEEXT), $(etc)/DOC): Depend on lisp.mk.
(distclean): Remove lisp.mk.
* Makefile.in ($(MAKEFILE_NAME)): No longer depend on src/lisp.mk.
* lisp/loadup.el: Tweak layout to make it easier to parse.
* make-dist: Do not distribute src/lisp.mk.
* build-aux/gitlog-to-emacslog: Add command-line options.
By default, refuse to remove an existing output file.
* Makefile.in (CHANGELOG): Update default.
(ChangeLog): Do not test for existing file.
(change-history-nocommit): Ensure temp file does not exist.
* Makefile.in (gen_origin): Move to gitlog-to-emacslog.
(emacslog): New variable.
(ChangeLog): Use $emacslog. Don't pass $gen_origin.
(unchanged-history-files): Use $emacslog rather than Makefile.in.
(change-history-nocommit): Store hash in $emacslog.
* build-aux/gitlog-to-emacslog (gen_origin): Move default here.
* admin/update_autogen (changelog_files): Update for the above.
(CHANGELOG): New variable.
(no-ChangeLog): Remove.
(ChangeLog): Replace "no-ChangeLog"; pass output file to script.
(change-history-nocommit): Use a temp file rather than insisting
on deletion of any existing "ChangeLog".
* Makefile.in ($(DOCS), $(INSTALL_DOC), $(UNINSTALL_DOC)):
Use make subst rather than sh IFS to split target string apart.
This makes 'make' output easier to follow.
Suggested by Glenn Morris in:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2015-04/msg00678.html
* Makefile.in (install-man): Don't treat ChangeLog.1 as a man page.
* doc/man/ChangeLog.1: Rename back from doc/man/ChangeLog.01.
* lisp/erc/ChangeLog.1: New file, containing the old contents of ...
* lisp/erc/ChangeLog.01, lisp/erc/ChangeLog.02, lisp/erc/ChangeLog.03:
* lisp/erc/ChangeLog.04, lisp/erc/ChangeLog.05, lisp/erc/ChangeLog.06:
* lisp/erc/ChangeLog.07, lisp/erc/ChangeLog.08, lisp/erc/ChangeLog.09:
Remove.
This more clearly distingiushes pre-April-7 ChangeLog entries (which
are for top-level files only) from post-April-7 entries (which are
about files at all levels. Problem reported by Glenn Morris in:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2015-04/msg00678.html
* ChangeLog.1: Move post-April-7 entries from here ...
* ChangeLog.2: ... to this new file.
* Makefile.in (CHANGELOG_HISTORY_INDEX_MAX): Bump to 2.
* Makefile.in (gen_origin): Fix to match what's in the master branch.
(no-ChangeLog, master-branch-is-current): New rules.
(change-history): Depend on them, to avoid similar future problems.
Escape the local-variables string to pacify Emacs when editing
Makefile.in.
* .gitignore: Add 'ChangeLog'.
* build-aux/gitlog-to-changelog: New file, from Gnulib.
* build-aux/gitlog-to-emacslog: New file.
* CONTRIBUTE: Document the revised workflow.
* Makefile.in (clean): Remove *.tmp and etc/*.tmp*
instead of just special cases.
(CHANGELOG_HISTORY_INDEX_MAX, CHANGELOG_N, gen_origin): New vars.
(ChangeLog, unchanged-history-files, change-history)
(change-history-commit): New rules.
* admin/admin.el (make-manuals-dist--1):
Don't worry about doc/ChangeLog.
* admin/authors.el: Add a FIXME.
* admin/make-tarball.txt:
* lisp/calendar/icalendar.el:
* lisp/gnus/deuglify.el:
* lisp/obsolete/gulp.el:
* lwlib/README:
Adjust to renamed ChangeLog history files.
* admin/merge-gnulib (GNULIB_MODULES): Add gitlog-to-changelog.
* admin/notes/repo: Call it 'master' a la Git, not 'trunk' a la Bzr.
Remove obsolete discussion of merging ChangeLog files.
New section "Maintaining ChangeLog history".
* build-aux/git-hooks/pre-commit:
Reject attempts to commit files named 'ChangeLog'.
* lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gnulib-comp.m4: Regenerate.
* make-dist: Make and distribute top-level ChangeLog if there's a
.git directory. Distribute the new ChangeLog history files
instead of scattered ChangeLog files. Distribute the new files
gitlog-to-changelog and gitlog-to-emacslog.

* build-aux/msys-to-w32: simplify the initial over-engineered
interface, and the implementation.
* Makefile.in (epaths-force-w32): Update for the above.
* Makefile.in (AWK, srcdir_doc_info_dir_inputs, info_dir_inputs):
New macros.
(clean): Remove info-dir.*.
(info_dir_deps): Depend on make-info-dir too.
Fix bug with wildcards that weren't expanded.
(${srcdir}/info/dir): Make sure info directory exists.
Don't call pwd; just redirect make-info-dir's stdout to temp file.
* build-aux/make-info-dir: Send output to stdout.
Take input file names from args.
Fix a "FIXME inefficient looping" by using awk's associative arrays.
Basically, this rewrites the script from scratch, and speeds up
'make info/dir' from 2.6s to 0.07s on my platform.
* Makefile.in (ACLOCAL_INPUTS): Add all m4/*.m4 files.
* src/Makefile.in (top_srcdir): New var.
(ntsource, lispsource, ALL_CFLAGS, gl-stamp, emacs.res):
Use '$(top_srcdir)' instead of '$(srcdir)/..';
its expansion is a bit shorter.
(../config.status): Actually build config.status instead of

(ACLOCAL_INPUTS, AUTOCONF_INPUTS):
New macros, copied and relocated from ../Makefile.in.
($(top_srcdir)/aclocal.m4, $(top_srcdir)/configure, config.in)

* src/Makefile.in (.el.elc): Replace suffix rule with pattern rule.
(%.elc): New pattern rule, with order-only prerequisite.
($(lisp)): No more need to depend on BOOTSTRAPEMACS.
($(lispsource)/loaddefs.el): Use an order-only prerequisite
in place of BOOTSTRAPEMACS.

($(srcdir)/aclocal.m4): Use it.
* configure.ac (ACLOCAL_PATH): AC_SUBST it.
* autogen.sh (env_space): New var.
Tell user what variables, if any, to pass to 'configure'.
All uses removed. This hack is no longer needed here
now that we can assume GNU Make's .PHONY feature works.

emacs-24.1.50.1, .2, etc lying around.
* Makefile.in: (install-arch-indep): Delete etc/DOC*.
(install-doc): No more need to delete etc/DOC.
* configure.in (INSTALL_ARCH_INDEP_EXTRA): New output variable.
* Makefile.in (INSTALL_ARCH_INDEP_EXTRA): New, set by configure.
(install-arch-indep): Don't install-etc for self-contained ns builds.
A separate mkdir rule is not needed, since MKDIR_P is thread-safe.
* Makefile.in (install-arch-dep): Ensure bindir exists.
Drop mkdir dependency.
(install-arch-indep): Ensure docdir, infodir, mandir exist.
(install-leim): Drop mkdir dependency.
(mkdir): Remove most directories, now made in relevant rules.
Remember to always call MKDIR_P and INSTALL_DATA from the top-level
directory, for the case in which we are falling back to build-aux/install-sh.
It would make life much easier if autoconf would use an absolute path
in this case.
* configure.in (etcdir): For a self-contained ns build,
set it to the appropriate values.
* Makefile.in (install-arch-dep): No need to move info/ any more.
* configure.in (ns_self_contained): New output variable.
* Makefile.in (ns_self_contained): New, set by configure.
(install-arch-dep): Use $ns_self_contained.
This is rather than installing it in one place then moving it.
* configure.in (archlibdir): Set it for self-contained ns builds.
(libexecdir): Don't expand it now (this is mainly cosmetic).
* Makefile.in (ns_appbindir, ns_appresdir):
Move them before things that may refer to them.
(install-arch-dep): No need to relocate self-contained ns libexec.
* lib-src/Makefile.in (ns_appbindir): New, set by configure.
* configure.in (AC_PROG_MKDIR_P): Call it, to set MKDIR_P.
(MKDEPDIR): Use $MKDIR_P.
* Makefile.in (MKDIR_P): New, set by configure.
(mkdir): Use $MKDIR_P.
* doc/emacs/Makefile.in (MKDIR_P): New, set by configure.
(mkinfodir): Use $MKDIR_P.
* doc/lispintro/Makefile.in (MKDIR_P): New, set by configure.
(mkinfodir): Use $MKDIR_P.
* doc/lispref/Makefile.in (MKDIR_P): New, set by configure.
(mkinfodir): Use $MKDIR_P.
* doc/misc/Makefile.in (MKDIR_P): New, set by configure.
(mkinfodir): Use $MKDIR_P.
* src/Makefile.in (MKDIR_P): New, set by configure.
* src/ns.mk (${ns_appdir}, ${ns_appbindir}Emacs): Use $MKDIR_P.
./lisp/simpl.ele never exists in the _build_ directory,
the Lisp files are always in the _source_ directory.
Even if they were not, it would be wrong to install just
*.el and *.elc, since there are subdirectories in lisp/.

* doc/emacs/Makefile.in (INFO_EXT, INFO_OPTS): New, set by configure.
(info, infoclean): Use $INFO_EXT.
($(infodir)/emacs$(INFO_EXT)): Use $INFO_EXT and $INFO_OPT.
* doc/emacs/makefile.w32-in (INFO_EXT, INFO_OPTS): New.
(INFO_TARGETS): Use $INFO_EXT.
($(infodir)/emacs$(INFO_EXT)): Use $INFO_EXT and $INFO_OPT, and -o.
* doc/lispintro/Makefile.in (INFO_EXT, INFO_OPTS): New, set by configure.

* doc/lispref/makefile.w32-in (INFO_EXT, INFO_OPTS): New.
(info, maintainer-clean): Use $INFO_EXT.
($(infodir)/elisp$(INFO_EXT)): Use $INFO_EXT and $INFO_OPT.
* doc/misc/Makefile.in (INFO_EXT, INFO_OPTS): New, set by configure.
(INFO_TARGETS): Use $INFO_EXT.
Make all rules generating info files use $INFO_EXT, $INFO_OPT, and -o.
* doc/misc/makefile.w32-in (INFO_EXT, INFO_OPTS): New.
(INFO_TARGETS): Use $INFO_EXT.
Make all rules generating info files use $INFO_EXT, $INFO_OPT, and -o.
The sed '/ing directory/d' piece is to remove the annoying
"entering/leaving directory" messages that GNU make insists on
printing when called recursively. --no-print-directory isn't portable.
* Makefile.in (INFO_FILES): Remove variable.
(INFO_NONMISC): New variable.
(install-arch-indep, uninstall): Don't use $INFO_FILES.
* doc/misc/Makefile.in (echo-info): New phony target, used by top-level.
* info/dir (File):
* Makefile.in: Add emacs-gnutls to the info directory and the
INFO_FILES target.
* doc/misc/emacs-gnutls.texi: Add documentation for the GnuTLS integration.
* doc/misc/gnutls.texi: New file to explain the GnuTLS integration.
* doc/misc/Makefile.in: Add gnutls.texi to build.
I have been using this change for many months in my private copy
of Emacs, and have used it to find several bugs. It's mature
enough to publish now.
* Makefile.in (GNULIB_MODULES): Add warnings, manywarnings.
* configure.in: Support --enable-gcc-warnings, in the style of
other GNU packages such as coreutils.
(C_WARNINGS_SWITCH): Remove, replacing with...
(WARN_CFLAGS, GNULIB_WARN_CFLAGS): New variable.
(PKG_CHECK_MODULES, C_SWITCH_X_SITE): Use -isystem rather than -I,
when including system files with GCC.
* etc/NEWS: Mention --enable-gcc-warnings.
* lib/Makefile.am (AM_CFLAGS): New macro.
* m4/manywarnings.m4, m4/warnings.m4: New files, from gnulib.
* lib-src/Makefile.in (C_WARNINGS_SWITCH): Remove.
(WARN_CFLAGS, WERROR_CFLAGS): New macros.
(BASE_CFLAGS): Use new macros rather than old.
* lwlib/Makefile.in (C_WARNINGS_SWITCH): Remove.
(WARN_CFLAGS, WERROR_CFLAGS): New macros.
(ALL_CFLAGS): Use new macros rather than old.
* oldXMenu/Makefile.in (C_WARNINGS_SWITCH): Remove.
(WARN_CFLAGS, WERROR_CFLAGS): New macros.
(ALL_CFLAGS): Use new macros rather than old.
* src/Makefile.in (C_WARNINGS_SWITCH): Remove.
(WARN_CFLAGS, WERROR_CFLAGS): New macros.
(ALL_CFLAGS): Use new macros rather than old.
* src/process.c: Ignore -Wstrict-overflow to work around GCC bug 52904.
* src/regex.c: Ignore -Wstrict-overflow. If !emacs, also ignore
-Wunused-but-set-variable, -Wunused-function, -Wunused-macros,
-Wunused-result, -Wunused-variable. This should go away once
the Emacs and Gnulib regex code is merged.
(xmalloc, xrealloc): Now static.
Bug reported by Chong Yidong for SunOS 5.10 Generic_127111-11 sparc.
I cannot reproduce it on SunOS 5.10 Generic_141444-09 sparc but
possibly this is because Sun fixed the 'stat' bug in my version.
* Makefile.in (GNULIB_TOOL_FLAGS): Do not avoid the pathmax module.
* lib/pathmax.h, m4/pathmax.m4: New files, from gnulib.
* lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gl-comp.m4: Regenerate.
These changes are based on gnulib version
4f11d6bebc3098c64ffde27079ab0d0cecfd0cdc dated 2011-10-07 20:59:10,
because Emacs is in feature freeze and we do not want to merge any
more-recent changes from gnulib.
* src/epaths.in (PATH_LOADSEARCH, PATH_DUMPLOADSEARCH, PATH_EXEC)
(PATH_DATA, PATH_DOC): Update the template values to be closer to
their typical values these days.
* Makefile.in, src/epaths.in: Comments.
* Makefile.in (cache_file, ENABLE_MAINTAINER_MODE, CONFIGUREFLAGS):
New macros.
(config.status, bootstrap): Use them to propagate configure flags
to sub-configures.
* configure.in (cache_file): AC_SUBST this, for Makefile.in.
Do not install arch-dependent files in the app bundle if
--disable-ns-self-contained is requested.
* configure.in (exec_prefix, libexecdir): Define relative to
ns_appbindir' only if configured for a self-contained app.
* Makefile.in (install-arch-dep): Test for the existence of
libexec in the Emacs.app bundle before executing commands.
Fixes: debbugs:1335
This clarifies and fixes some licensing issues raised by Glenn Morris
<http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2011-09/msg00397.html>.
It also merges the latest version of texinfo.tex and has some
MSVC-related changes that don't affect Emacs.
* Makefile.in (GNULIB_TOOL_FLAGS): Avoid msvc-inval, msvc-nothrow,
pathmax, and raise, since these are needed only to address
MSVC-related issues that Emacs doesn't have.
* doc/misc/texinfo.tex, lib/dup2.c, lib/gnulib.mk, lib/signal.in.h:
* lib/sigprocmask.c, lib/stat.c, lib/stdio.in.h, lib/sys_stat.in.h:
* lib/unistd.in.h, m4/dup2.m4, m4/getloadavg.m4, m4/gl-comp.m4:
* m4/include_next.m4, m4/signal_h.m4, m4/signalblocking.m4:
* m4/stdint.m4, m4/stdio_h.m4, m4/sys_stat_h.m4, m4/time_h.m4:
* m4/unistd_h.m4: Merge from gnulib.
* m4/largefile.m4: New file, so that Emacs does not mess up when
accessing files with large inode numbers in MacOS X 10.5 and later.
* m4/nocrash.m4: New file, to avoid triggering background debugger
and/or create core dumps during 'configure'.
* build-aux/move-if-change: Renamed from move-if-change.
* build-aux/snippet/arg-nonnull.h: Renamed from arg-nonnull.h.
* build-aux/snippet/c++defs.h: Renamed from c++defs.h.
* build-aux/snippet/warn-on-use.h: Renamed from warn-on-use.h.
* build-aux/snippet/_Noreturn.h: New file, for draft C1X _Noreturn.
* .bzrignore: The autogenerated files compile, config.guess,
config.sub, depcomp, install-sh, and missing are now in build-aux.
* Makefile.in (epaths-force, sync-from-gnulib):
move-if-change is now in build-aux.
(GNULIB_TOOL_FLAGS): Avoid threadlib; this is now a prerequisite
of gnulib's pthread_sigmask module, but Emacs doesn't need it.
(mkdir): install-sh is now in build-aux.
* config.bat: c++defs.h is now in build-aux/snippets.
* configure.in: Specify AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR with build-aux (the
usual parameter).
* lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gl-comp.m4: Regenerate.
* lib/makefile.w32-in (ARG_NONNULL_H): arg-nonnull.h moved
to build-aux/snippet.
* lib/pthread_sigmask.c, lib/stdlib.in.h, m4/extensions.m4:
* m4/getopt.m4, m4/gnulib-common.m4, m4/pthread_sigmask.m4:
Merge from gnuilib. This fixes porting bugs on Cygwin, Irix, and
Solaris, enables MacOS extensions, and enables nocrash during
'configure'.
* make-dist: Adjust to new build-aux and build-aux/snippit dirs.
* admin/notes/copyright: The files compile, config.guess, config.sub,
depcomp, install-sh, missing, and move-if-change are now in the
new build-aux subdirectory. The files arg-nonnull.h, c++defs.h,
and warn-on-use.h are now in build-aux/snippets. New file
build-aux/snippets/_Noreturn.h.
* leim/Makefile.in (install): install-sh is now in build-aux.
* lib-src/Makefile.in ($(DESTDIR)${archlibdir}): install-sh moved
to build-aux.
* msdos/sedlibmk.inp (CONFIG_CLEAN_VPATH_FILES): Adjust to snippet moves
from top level to build-aux/snippet.
* src/Makefile.in (gl-stamp): move-if-change is now in build-aux.
* Makefile.in (GNULIB_TOOL_FLAGS): Do not avoid sigprocmask.
* configure.in (AC_TYPE_UID_T): New dummy macro.
Configure gnulib after adjusting LIBS,
so that gnulib can assume the libraries in LIBS.
* lib/pthread_sigmask.c, lib/sigprocmask.c, m4/signalblocking.m4:
New files, automatically imported from gnulib.
* lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gl-comp.m4: Regenerate.
* src/Makefile.in (LIB_PTHREAD_SIGMASK): New macro.
(LIBES): Use it.
* Makefile.in (GNULIB_MODULES): Add pthread_sigmask.
(GNULIB_TOOL_FLAGS): Avoid sigprocmask. Emacs does its own
implementation of 'sigprocmask' on Windows, and it assumes
'sigprocmask' on non-Windows hosts, so it doesn't need the
sigprocmask module.
* lib/signal.in.h, m4/pthread_sigmask.m4, m4/signal_h.m4:
New files, automatically imported from gnulib.
* lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gl-comp.m4: Automatically-imported update
due to the above changes.
* .bzrignore: Add lib/signal.h.
* Makefile.in (GNULIB_MODULES): Add dup2.
* configure.in: Do not check for dup2; gnulib does that now.
* lib/dup2.c, m4/dup2.m4: New files, from gnulib.
* src/sysdep.c (dup2) [!HAVE_DUP2]: Remove; gnulib now does this.
